A Process for Setting New Year Goals with Deeper Intention

“You are never too old to set a new goal or dream a new dream.” - CS Lewis

As we begin the new year, many of us are thinking about new goals and intentions for 2023. With the start of every new year, I notice my desire to "start over", to lean into new supportive habits or get rid of old ones, to envision all the things I want build and develop. I have definitely been deeply reflecting on what I want to create this year (I have some big plans + a baby boy due any week now!) and what I'm also ready to let go of so that I can move forward with less baggage and more lightness + ease (you have to let go to grow, I often say).

If you are looking to go a bit deeper with your intention-setting process for 2023, I've created some questions that can help you (shout out to my friend Lis for introducing me to a few of these!)

FIRST (and imo, the most important step):
Identify a guiding word or theme that sums up how you want to feel this year.

Because if we don't get to feel the way we want, achieving any goal won't actually feel fulfilling  (shoutout to author Danielle LaPorte and her amazing book the Desire Map for really helping me understand this).

Second: Outline your top 2-3 goals or intentions for the year or next quarter.

With each goal, answer the following questions:

  • Why does this goal matter to me?

  • What are my biggest fears around this goal?

  • What are the obstacles or roadblocks, if any?

  • How can I get support to overcome the obstacles? Who can support me?

  • What’s one next step I can take?

  • Are there ways I can align this goal with how I want to feel?

By taking your goals a step further, and uncovering what might be in your way and where you can get support, you can see your intentions with clearer sight and have a greater chance of creating them. I’d love to hear how it goes!
